Manifestations of a Creative Mind

Artist Statement

My art explores the potency and fragility of life. My work is interdisciplinary creativity that synthesizes spontaneous movement and meticulous detail. My art coalesces the organic and the sharp, harmony and dissonance, as well as reality and the abstract. There are visual elements inspired by the flow and movement within calligraphy and the natural world. The way I approach my work is improvisational. I will often begin with more broad and gestural strokes, and work into it with line and detail later on.
I am particularly interested in exploring and dissecting: identity, facades, nostalgia, and the unconscious mind. Also, I am fascinated with contrasts in urban life and nature, and the internal and external manifestations of the self. I utilize music, poetry, photography, animation, video (etc) in addition to more tradition methods of painting and drawing. Abstract expressionism, biomorphic art, and street art shape my style. From a young age, I was really moved by the prints of Hokusai, and the abstraction and emotional content of Picasso and Kandinsky’s work. I have found that the act of creating artwork is a vital force that maintains balance in my existence. I open a channel from my psyche, through my arm and movement, to the canvas or paper. In all, I express and explore myself and the world through my art.
